Role of Betsy DeVos of Pushing for Quality of Education

Several years ago, Betsy DeVos was deeply touched by incidences she encountered at Potter’s House School, where parents would do anything within their capabilities to ensure their children are learning in a safe and secure environment. This was the beginning of her involvement in educational reforms in the United States. Today, Mrs. DeVos is proud of the work she has achieved so far with the help of her family, especially Dick DeVos and their grown-up children. In February 2017, she was confirmed by the Senate as the country’s Education Secretary following nomination by President Trump. It is a perfect opportunity to ensure the work she started several years ago has been implemented fully in all the states, and allow kids to access the education that would shape their career.

Betsy DeVos started by offering scholarship opportunities to needy students in Grand Rapids. As a result of her commitment to ensure all students have access to better education, Mrs. DeVos was involved in other activities that further pushed her desire. She created a foundation that sponsored selected students from needy families whose parents were unable to pay tuition fees. Both Dick and Betsy DeVos were involved in Michigan’s politics and that offered them the opportunity to seek political solutions to advance their needs. She started a PAC in Michigan to push for establishment of more charter schools in the state. They achieved tremendous success in Michigan, and those involved believed it was the right time to expand their work nationally.

Betsy DeVos started her philanthropic causes because the education system in the U.S. was discriminating against kids from less privileged families. According to Mrs. DeVos, the system does not favor kids from needy family background because their parents are not able to choose which schools their kids should learn. The performance of these kids was dwindling, meaning that they had no chances of competing with those from rich families. Betsy was involved in providing mentorship programs to at-risk students in Grand Rapids for 15 years. Her perspective about education changed completely after interacting with teachers, students and parents during that time.

Work History of Betsy DeVos

When Mrs. DeVos was growing up, she witnessed local leaders in her hometown supporting projects to improve the standard of education. It was one of the reasons she decided to follow the same path and help under-served children to access education. The she established movement has already covered half the states in the U.S., and the District of Columbia. Betsy DeVos served on various boards including Mars Hills Bible, ArtPrize, Kids Hope USA and others. She served as one of the executives at the family owned business, The Windquest Group.
