The Rise of Betsy DeVos

Betsy Devos is a veteran leader in education, business, and politics. She began her long and illustrious careers after graduating from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1982, when she was 24, Betsy married Amway businessman, Dick Devos. His family, who started Amway, would also later become the owners of Orlando Magic. The union between Betsy and Dick resulted in four children and five grandchildren. As far as business, she formerly chaired the Michigan-based The Windquest Group. Her biggest achievement has been in the arena of politics.

Throughout the past 35 years she has been elected chairman of the Michigan Republican party four times, served on a wide range of campaigns in leadership positions, and been highly active in a multitude of party organizations and political action committees. Most of her political work has been on the state level. She also active in charitable causes in her community, formerly chairing both the American Federation for Children and The Philanthropy Roundtable boards of directors. Her primary concern in politics has been centered on education.

Last October the then still President-elect nominated Devos as his Secretary of Education. Earlier this year her nomination was barely passed through the Senate after the tie-breaking vote in her favor by Vice President Pence. She shares a strong desire with Trump: school choice. This means they support things like scholarship tax credits, vouchers, education savings accounts, and charter schools. It also means they are proponents on giving all parents complete access to all the educational options for their child. In other words, low-income families will have access to all of the schools that previously rich families could only use. Visit Betsy’s profile page on Facebook.

At this point it is not really clear if Betsy Devos is as passionate as Trump on the subject of a complete and radical education reform. However, the two are presently in serious talks concerning the subject. It is generally believed that while Betsy Devos will go for complete reform, her expectations will be more realistic than Trump’s. Devos’ nomination by Trump was not out of the blue and was definitely deserved. The Devos’ family as a whole has a long history with education funding and politics, particularly in the area of charter school.

Betsy and Dick Devos have personally poured millions of dollars and hours of work into educational causes. It will be very interesting to see where here political position at the White House goes. There are her skeptics, of course, but those who really know Betsy are very optimistic about the prospects. Visit betsydevos.com to know more about Betsy.

Kate Hudson’s Fabletics Could Have Amazon on the Ropes?

While it is highly unlikely that any company will have Amazon on the ropes, there is one company in the sports apparel niche that is certainly garnering some attention. Amazon sits comfortably in the top spot in the e-commerce fashion world, owning 20 percent of the sales in that space. Having not had any strong competition for years, Amazon might want to look a little closer at Kate Hudson’s Fabletics. Her company has already sold over $250 million in women’s active-wear in only three years, and may have their sights o bigger things.

Hudson was discussing the popularity of her athleisure brand and how her company has commanded such a huge audience in such a small amount of time. She says it all comes down to reverse showrooming and the Fabletics membership program. To follow the money trail, we begin at the Fabletics shops in the mall, when women come to window-shop, take the Lifestyle Quiz, grab the free membership, and even try on as many of the workout apparel pieces they can. To the surprise of everyone, not all women leave the store making a purchase.

If the stores are not pushing sales, how did Fabletics hit $250 in sales in only a 36 month span?

The secret to the success of Kate Hudson’s Fabletics, it all comes down to how women shop online. Most women are frustrated with shopping at Amazon, and then having to return everything because it rarely fits. With Fabletics, since you already tried on the items in the store and know what size fits you, once you visit the Fabletics website, all you have to do is stuff your shopping cart with high-quality active-wear. The guesswork is taken out of the equation, and all those things you tried on while shopping at the mall have been added to your online shopping cart to make the buying process easier.

So now these consumers have an easier way to shop for items they want to fit them, they get free shipping with their membership, and they even enjoy lower pricing. Kate Hudson’s Fabletics is all about making the shopping experience easier and more personalized at the same time. Since the items women are buying are high-quality to begin with, the decision to add more to the shopping cart than they would at the mall just makes sense. Amazon may not be worried now, but if Kate Hudson’s Fabletics keeps making these types of sales numbers, watch out!

Oncotarget Publishes a Study Revealing that E-cigarettes’ Adverse Effects are Similar to those of Normal Cigarettes

According to a study conducted by the prestigious University of Rochester Medical Center, individuals that opt for electronic cigarettes are not safe as e-cigars have similar health hazards as compared to the traditional cigarettes. This research which was published in Oncotarget is the first of its kind to address electronic cigarettes and their harmful effects on oral health on cellular and molecular levels. Irfan Rahman, Ph.D. Lecturer at the University, was in charge of the study.

Currently, e-cigarettes are used by millennials who believe that they offer safer and healthier alternatives to traditional cigarettes. In the past, researchers thought that chemicals found in cigarette smoke were responsible for the adverse health outcomes; however, newer developments of knowledge suggest that this is not entirely accurate. The journal is peer reviewed and is published by Impact Journals.

According to the study conducted by Ifran and his team at the UR Medical College, the vapors emitted from the e-cigarettes releases inflammatory proteins that worsen stress inside the tissues resulting in severe damage that develops into several oral infections. According to Professor Rahman, the damage on the individual’s oral cavity and gums are dependants on the quantity and how often the person smokes the e-cigarettes. Additionally, the same study discovered that some of the chemicals incorporated to flavor the e-cigarettes may result in adverse harm to mouth tissues.

Professor Ifran clarifies that more research on e-cigars is imperative and he would like if all manufacturers would disclose all information on the materials and chemicals used so that customers are knowledgeable of the potential risks.
